Work on the New Hospital Begins!
Campus View from Main Entry

By Cassandra Clark, Project Communications Director

After what has seemed like a very long journey, we now have permits in hand, and contractors have already mobilized on the Eden Medical Center campus to get it ready for construction of the highly anticipated new hospital. We want to keep you informed about the project, and let you know what you can expect in the next week and throughout the month of July.

Fencing around the perimeter of the construction area is almost complete! The fencing goes along our property line on Stanton Avenue, through our campus, and along the adjacent apartment buildings. We are also installing a gate at one of our Stanton Avenue entrances to limit access to the area only to construction vehicles.

Tree stump removal on the future helipad site will begin later this week.  The new site is approximately 150 feet north of the present location, as close as possible to the Eden Medical Trauma Center. Two days have been allocated for this work. Grading of the new helipad site will begin as early as June 26th, and will take up to three weeks to complete.

Demolition of the vacant Pine Cone Apartments on Stanton Avenue will begin July 1st. The structure will be demolished in one day, and it will take about two full weeks to break down and remove the debris.

Hours of work will be from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday, but is subject to change as work moves into subsequent phases.  We will keep you posted on construction schedules.

The Alameda County Fire Department has requested use of the vacant Pine Cone Apartment building for training purposes on June 29 and 30, prior to demolition. Firefighters in training often use vacant buildings to practice search, rescue and simulated fire control.  You will see firefighters on site on these dates, using smoke generators (no real fire) and equipment. Their life-saving work is a benefit to the community and we are proud to support their efforts.

If you have any questions or concerns about the preparation phase of construction, please comment on our blog, and we will respond promptly.

You can follow any responses to this entry through the RSS 2.0 feed. You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site.

Wake Up People – Sutter is closing San Leandro Hospital, the new hospital is smaller, we will all have longer wait times, yes, you in Castro Valley can and will be diverted to hospitals 5, 15 miles away. Keep San Leandro open so care for everyone is at the level we currently have.

Recently you began work on the ground work for the heli-pad. I am able to watch from my back room which brings up a concern. When the helicopter lands at its new location, it will be louder because there is nothing in between the helipad and my house and more dangerous for the same reasons. The lower the barrier the louder the noise. The wind the blades create will cause disruption to my yard and cause more dust in my house if my windows are open. If worst case scenerio happens and a helicopter crashes while trying to land or take off, there is nothing to protect my house and family. We are very familiar with the dangers of helicopters, My husband is a Battalion Chief of the fire Dept. in Redwood City and works frequently with them. At one of the meetings we discussed a living wall, but have never heard from anyone on the subject. The community is getting a wonderful hospital in which I will never use, yet I have to be inconvenienced for years through the construction process. Is there any way you can ease my mind and tell me the living wall will be constructed soon to provide a small band aid during this operation. My address is 19783 Louise ct. My backyard and room where we spend all our time, backs up to Laurel Grove back parking lot. Thank you for your help in this matter. Looking forward to hearing from you. Helen Cavallero

What date and time of day will the structure of the Pinecone Apartments on Stanton Ave are demolished? How will the structure be demolished (by wrecking ball, implosion, etc)? I have pets that use the outside when nature calls and don’t want them outside during the time of demolition.

Thank you for your questions. We will have a post soon regarding the helipad relocation and its impact on the community. The Pine Cone Apartments were demolished in two days, between the hours of 7 a.m. and noon on the first day, and 7 a.m. and 3 p.m.on the second day. Work is now underway to remove and recycle the debris.

And finally, your question about the design of the new hospital and the involvement of the caregivers — good news! Teams of nurses, caregivers and physicians were intimately involved in the design of the new hospital. Bryan Daylor, Eden’s Vice President of Ancillary Services, wrote two blog posts on this very subject. You can read more at these two posts: http://suttermedicalcentercastrovalley.org/blog/2009/caregivers-contribute-experience-and-creativity-to-design-the-new-hospital/ and http://suttermedicalcentercastrovalley.org/blog/2009/technology-innovation-and-patient-focused-clinical-flow/.

Thank you for your comments!
